The Ritual

Candle Care Guide

A few mindful steps make every burn safer, cleaner, and longer.

Why It Matters

Your Candle Deserves
a Little Love

Every Hush & Dusk candle is hand-poured with intention. With just a little care, your candle will burn cleaner, last longer, and fill your space with the perfect scent throw — every single time.

Follow these simple guidelines and transform each lighting into a true ritual.

Handcrafted candle making

A well-tended candle tells you a story, burn after burn.

Step by Step

Essential Care Rules

01
✂️

Trim Your Wick

Before every single burn, trim your wick to 5mm (¼ inch). A long wick causes mushrooming, soot, and uneven burning. Use sharp scissors or a wick trimmer and remove any debris from the wax pool.

Before Every Burn

🕐

The First Burn is Sacred

The very first time you light your candle, burn it long enough for the entire top layer of wax to melt edge to edge. This typically takes 2–3 hours and prevents tunnelling — a permanent memory ring.

Burn Time Limit

Never burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Extended burning overheats the wax pool, weakens fragrance integrity, and can cause the wick to drift. Always let the candle cool before relighting.

Avoid Drafts

Keep your candle away from open windows, fans, and air conditioning vents. Drafts cause uneven burning, flickering, and excessive soot on the glass. The ideal environment is calm and still.

Store Away from Sunlight

Direct sunlight and strong artificial light can cause colour fading and fragrance deterioration. Store your candles in a cool, dry, shaded place — ideally with the lid on to protect the scent.

Stop Before the Bottom

Stop burning when 10mm (½ inch) of wax remains at the bottom. Burning beyond this point can overheat the glass vessel and pose a safety risk. At this stage, clean the jar and repurpose it!

Extinguish Safely

Use a candle snuffer or a spoon to gently extinguish the flame rather than blowing it out. Blowing can send hot wax flying and cause the wick to drift off-centre or smoulder and produce smoke.

Repurpose Your Vessel

Once the candle is finished, place the jar in the freezer for 2 hours. The remaining wax will contract and pop out cleanly. Wash with warm soapy water to reveal a beautiful glass vessel — perfect for storage, flowers, or another life entirely.

Sustainability
⚠️

Safety First, Always

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Do not burn near flammable materials (curtains, paper, fabric).
  • Ensure the room is well-ventilated during use.
  • Do not move a burning candle — hot wax can spill.
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle — it can shatter the glass.

Questions

Common Questions

Why is there white powder on my candle?

This is called "frosting" — a completely natural characteristic of soy wax. It doesn't affect the scent or burn quality at all, and it's actually a sign your candle is made from natural soy!

Why does my candle look uneven after burning?

This can happen if the candle was extinguished before the melt pool reached the edges. Always allow the first burn to melt the full top layer. Subsequent burns should be even.

My scent seems weak — what's wrong?

Trim your wick to 5mm, ensure the room isn't too large or too draughty, and give the candle a full 2-hour burn. Soy candles have a subtle, true-to-life scent throw compared to synthetic alternatives.

Is soy wax better than paraffin?

Yes — soy wax burns cleaner (no black soot or toxic chemicals), is biodegradable, renewable, and holds fragrance beautifully at lower temperatures. It's the only wax we'll ever use.
